Mad Max Fury RoadWe’re stupidly excited for George Miller’s upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road around these parts. 2015 marks 30 years since our last trip to the post-apocalyptic Australian outback, and this has been such a long, hard road that we weren’t sure the film was ever going to make it to theaters. (Part of me still expects some sort of vengeful god to strike it down before I get to see it.) We still have to wait until May 15, but to hold us over until then, we’ve got a few looks at a few things that DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint worked with Miller to put together for fans, and they’re as awesome as you would hope.

There is a hardcover art book called Mad Max: Fury Road: Inspired Artists, which features Mad Max-influenced work form 65 well-known artists. This is the front cover of that book…

Mad Max Fury Road…and here is what the back looks like. This collection hits store shelves, both brick-and-mortar and digital, on May 6, just before the movie actually opens.

Mad Max Fury RoadAnd following on the heels of that, Vertigo will also release a prequel comic called Mad Max: Fury Road: Nux & Immortan Joe #1. That drops on May 20, just after the movie opens, and here is the cover so you can pick it out of the lineup at your local comic shop as you rush in early that morning.

Mad Max Fury RoadIt makes sense to drop this one later, as it gives fans a chance to see Fury Road first, and meet the two main characters. The action of the film follows Max Rockatansky (now played by Tom Hardy, taking over for Mel Gibson), and the iconic lone wolf badass who teams up with Furiosa (a one-armed Charlize Theron) to transport a group of people safely across the wastes. They’re pursued by a group of madmen, led by Immortan Joe (played by Hugh Keays-Byrne, who you remember as the Toe Cutter from the first film). Nux (Nicholas Hoult) is one of his henchmen, and the comic will explore some of their earlier adventures, which are probably not all that nice, including origins.

After this there will also be a slew of new character comics, including Furiosa #1 and a two-part Mad Max title. Miller wrote many of these himself, so we have that to look forward to.

Here’s the whole press release if you’d like to peruse:

Vertigo, the innovative, boundary-pushing imprint of DC Entertainment, will collaborate with Mad Max: Fury Road director, producer and co-writer George Miller on two upcoming projects based on the film. The first is a Deluxe Edition hardcover entitled MAD MAX: FURY ROAD: INSPIRED ARTISTS, in which sixty-five top artists will create art inspired by the world of Mad Max: Fury Road. The second is four comic book stories that follow four main characters of the film and tell their prelude stories leading up to the film’s opening scene.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD: INSPIRED ARTISTS will contain double-page spreads from 65 visionary artists bringing their own unique style to the world of Mad Max: Fury Road. Each of the artists’ work will be inspired by the post-apocalyptic landscape of Miller’s design. These spreads will range from spectacular action sequences to haunting character portraits. Artists participating include Lee Bermejo, Dave McKean, Cliff Chiang, Nicola Scott, Stephanie Hans, Tara McPherson, among others. This book is due to hit shelves on May 6, prior to the film’s May 15th release.

In addition, George Miller, Nico Lathouris and Mark Sexton are writing four prelude stories that follow leading characters Nux, Immortan Joe, Furiosa, and Mad Max, whose story will be in two parts. This miniseries will release one issue a month, starting with MAD MAX: FURY ROAD: NUX & IMMORTAN JOE #1 releasing on May 20, followed by MAD MAX: FURY ROAD: FURIOSA #1 and MAD MAX: FURY ROAD: MAD MAX #1 & #2. Nico Lathouris served as a co-writer on the film while Mark Sexton served as storyboard and concept artist for Mad Max: Fury Road. Interior artists working on these projects include Riccardo Burchielli, Leandro Fernandez, Tristan Jones and Mark Sexton, while covers will be illustrated by Tommy Lee Edwards.
