Sterling is the son of Aralean Banks and Sterling Brown. He was raised in Olivette, a suburb of St. Louis. He is married to actress Ryan Michelle Bathe, with whom he has two children.
Sterling is a fourth cousin of political activist, news commentator, author, and attorney Van Jones. Sterling’s maternal great-great-great-grandparents, Columbus Green and Julia, were also Van’s paternal great-great-great-grandparents.
