Joseph Saddle was born on January 1, 1958, in Bridgetown, Barbados. His parents later emigrated to the united states from Barbados. Grandmaster grew up in New York City’s the Bronx and attended Samuel Gompers high school, a public vocational school where he learned how to repair electronic equipment. His father was a fan of Caribbean and African American recordings, and both of his parents influenced his musical tastes.

In his childhood years, the grandmaster was fascinated by his father’s record collections, and he admitted to getting in trouble for touching the records. After he completed high school, Grandmaster became involved in the earliest New York DJ scene attending parties set up by DJ Kool Herc.
